I have a job interview QUESTION?!?

I worked at Steak n Shake for 2 weeks about a year ago. It was my first job. I actually did learn a lot about food service and what is expected from a waitress. I also became familiar with the computer system for typing in orders…pretty much all that server stuff. However I ended up leaving because I had my sisters rehearsal dinner for her wedding and could not get off. I figured since I had been there such a short time that I cared more about that family weekend than the new job. Obviously that was not the best thing on my part as far as work history goes. On Monday I have an interview at Olive Garden. I need a job extremely bad and I know I would be good at the job. My question is how do I go about talking about my work history in order to make it sound not so bad.
Also, I plan on looking at the menu online of the meal and wine options with the hopes that already being familiar with the menu would be a plus. So any suggestions or other tips to help me ace this interview!!

Good idea to study the menu so that you can show familiarity with it, it shows good job hunter instincts. Go a step further and do some research on the company itself – you’d be surprised how few applicants do this, so when you do you’ll impress the heck out of them.

The other question… it’s all a matter of turning a negative into a positive. It can be done with honesty and thoughtfulness. When they ask you why you spent only two weeks at that job, tell them honestly what your priorities were then and how they have changed now. Then finish answering with what you are bringing to the restaurant that will benefit them and their customers. It’s all about presenting yourself to them with a “value-added” attitude…. this is what I can do for YOU. This is why I love to work with customers, etc.

Oh, and when they ask if you have any questions for them at the end of the interview, do NOT say no. This is where you have a chance to show off your research on the company or just a chance to show thoughtfulness. In a pinch a good question is “Can you tell me what a typical day is like around here?”

Good luck!
