Activities having to do with historic Venice?
I am doing a history project and am using Venice, Italy as a city. I have making wine and gondola racing. I need one more idea and preferably a location in the city in where to do it. It needs to be historic and in Venice or right outside of it. thank you so much!
There are a couple of big events that are related to the history of Venice – one is Carnevale. There’s information on the history of Carnevale, the masks, and photos of recent Ceanevales here: http://www.carnivalofvenice.com/area.asp?id=4
Another event is the Il Redentore celebration in July. This is keeping a promise made when Venice survived one of the Plagues. Today, boats come into the basin in front of the Doge’s Palace throughout the day and there’s a big fireworks display around 11 pm. http://www.absoluteastronomy.com/topics/Il_Redentore , http://www.worldeventsguide.com/event/622/Venice-Italy/Feast-of-the-Redeemer-Il-Redentore.html
The boat race is a good idea, there are several regattas here every year. In particular, there is the historic regatta on the Grand Canal: http://www.istc.org/sisp/index.htm?fx=event&event_id=170206
There is also the Regatta of Antiche Repubbliche Marinare which is a race between Venice, Amalfi, Genoa, and Pisa which alternates between the locations. There’s a big costumed parade representing historical figures from each of the cities before the race: Regatta of Antiche Repubbliche Marinare
